History

The presence of Iberian and Roman settlements is proved by discoveries of remains such as ceramics and coins in the 'serra de l`espasa', 200 metres away from town. The best pieces are kept in the Museum of Reus.

During the 16th century the town experienced an important growth. Its first church was built in 1583. This former church used to be located in front of the current Town Hall.

Pere Joan Barceló i Anguera, also known as 'El Carrasclet' (1687-1741), native from Capçanes was a celebrity in his time. He fought in the Succession War supporting Carles d`Austria and was sent to prison several times. Later, he joined the guerrilla warfare and became colonel in charge of 8000 men.

For many years he found shelter in the 'serra de Llaveria' and from that place fought for the rights of the Catalan nation.

In his honour there is a footpath included in the footpath Network of Catalunya.

Remarkable places

The most important building is the parish church of 'La Nativitat de la Mare de Déu' built in 1791. The building is formed by three naves, a transept and a cupola.

The Town Hall was rebuilt in 1990. In the building there is a ceramics mural sculpture on the grape vintage by sculptor Francesc Carulla accompanied by a poem by writer Marià Manent.

VEREMADORES

Vénen com a una dansa tranquil.la, com a un joc que la tardor vigila;
Passa llur jovenesa, segura, sota el foc dels núvols alts i duu un alè d'argila.
Quan el marge reposen, tenen als dits encara aquell rou de les vinyes on el setembre lluu;
i pesen dolçament, com un raïm madur, sobre la terra clara.

It is also worth visiting the Fountains of Santa Rosalia. According to our ancestors, these waters help recover from gall and liver diseases. This is a perfect spot to spend a leisure day and enjoy its calm and beautiful landscape.
